Introducing the new band director for Ocean Lakes High School!
Michael Parker is a native of Colonial Heights, VA. He recently graduated Cum Laude from James Madison University with a Bachelor’s of Music concentrating in Music Education. Mr. Parker performed with a number of ensembles at JMU including the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Band, and the JMU Brass Band, which placed 2nd at the 2016 North American Brass Band Association Championships. He studied trumpet with Dr. Chris Carrillo and Dr. Ross Ahlhorn and conducting with Dr. Stephen Bolstad.
Mr. Parker was also heavily active in JMU’s 450+ member marching band, the Marching Royal Dukes. He served on the MRD leadership team for three years, including one season as Drum Major in 2016. During his time with the MRD’s, Mr. Parker had the opportunity to travel and perform at a number of notable venues including the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (2013), the Rome New Year’s Day Parade performing for Pope Francis in Vatican Square (2015), the Virginia Music Educator’s Association Conference (2016), and the FCS National Football Championship Game (2016).
Mr. Parker was active in the music education community at JMU, as well. In 2015, he was awarded the Joy Hollar Costello Endowed Scholarship for Music Education. He served as Outreach Committee head for the JMU chapter National Association of Music Education Collegiate and was a student presenter at the 2016 VMEA Conference in Dr. Lisa Maynard’s session, “Teaching Without Talking”. Mr. Parker was also a contributing author to a book on improvisation in a band or orchestra classroom by Dr. David Stringham that will soon be published by GIA Publications.
Mr. Parker was a collegiate member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the nation’s oldest and largest secret national fraternal society of music, and served as the Fraternity Education Officer for three semesters. Mr. Parker is thrilled to begin his teaching career at Virginia Beach and to be working with the dedicated and talented students of Ocean Lakes.
